HadCRUT 5

User:RCraig09, while you're updating this figure, could you use the latest HadCRUT data? Version 5 is out now, which aligns a better with the others of the big four data sets (NOAA, Berkeley, GISS). Thanks! Femkemilene (對話) 09:12, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[回覆]

✓ Done Thanks. They don't tell me anything! :-D Mission accomplished.

How to preserve the translations

I saw that User:Efbrazil was able to perserve the translations when updating. I don't know enough here to help, but maybe Efbrazil does. Femkemilene (對話) 12:34, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[回覆]

User:RCraig09: Generate the new svg, then open it along side the old svg (in notepad) and do a merge. I think it's easiest to search for switch statements in the localized file (switch is how localization works), then move those over to the new file. You can also search for <text tags in the two files, or for specific strings that are localized. --Efbrazil (對話) 21:24, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[回覆]
User:Efbrazil I'm aware of "doing a merge" manually. The detail of it seemed daunting (pesky details complicating the SVG) but I'll give it a try within a day or two.
User:Efbrazil and :: User:Femkemilene I'm embarrassed to say, I don't know how to view <switch>-based versions to be sure they render correctly. Is there a flag/setting somewhere on Wikipedia, Wikimedia, Chrome, etc.? (I'd rather not have to travel to Czech Republic and Japan!)
You can set language prefs in chrome: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/173424?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop --Efbrazil (對話) 23:08, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[回覆]
That seems to work, though I have to add or remove a language from the list of languages entirely to move on to a second language, rather than just move it down or up the list of languages.
User:Efbrazil Are you sure the browser is actually using the <switch> text and not just translating what it encounters in the English-language version? Chrome offers to do on most foreign-language web pages I encounter and I'm concerned it's bypassing the <switch> text. RCraig09 (對話) 23:29, 22 January 2022 (UTC) Never mind... I verified Chrome works directly on the<switch> text. New version 11 is uploaded with CS and JP translations.
Glad you got it working! Yeah, the fallback logic is weird, I remember having troubles with that too. --Efbrazil (對話) 17:15, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[回覆]

As an FYI: I simplified the svg code that the automatic translation tool inserts. The use of tspan and id= designators appears to be unnecessary. Simplified svg is:

<switch>
<text x="550" y="46" systemLanguage="cs">Změna průměrné globální teploty</text>
<text x="550" y="46" systemLanguage="ja">世界の平均気温変化</text>
<text x="550" y="46" >Global average temperature change</text>
</switch>

I hope this bit of documentation helps editors in the future.

The Japanese translation of this image uses Chinese characters instead of Japanese characters. Notice how the last character in the title "世界の平均気温変化" is written using the Simplified Chinese character "" instead of the Japanese character "". Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this?
