It looks like from a discussion on french Wikipedia, this warrior monk is a sōhei, not a yamabushi. On japanese wikipedia, the picture is used as a sōhei, not as a yamabushi. I found the book Japanese Warrior Monks: AD 949-1603. here, ant it's just a warrior monk, there is no japanese translation. This is a re-enactment from the late 1800s, here is a link to the original photograph which does not mention either "Yamabushi" or "Sohei" in the discription.
