This is not the rescue

[编辑]

This picture is of Shackleton leaving Elephant Island in The James Caird, not of him returning to rescue the rest of the crew. I found this photo in Wright, Joanna; Shane Murphy, Gael Newton, Michael Gray (2001年) 《 South with Endurance, Shacklrton's Antarctic Expedition 1914-1917, The Photographs of Frank Hurley》、Bloomsbury ISBN0747557195. , ISBN: 0747557195 on page 197. The caption for the photograph reads; "The remaining Elephant Island party farewell Shackleton. This original nitrate was later altered by Frank Hurley to represent the rescue.". I found an additional source to back your assertion about the photo's true nature. A 2004 article in The Guardian cited Alf Howard, a chemist who had befriended Hurley on a 1929 Antarctic expedition, and makes further mention of the modified nature of the photo.
