are we sure its one day old?

since nobody else has brought this up .... are the spines really that large already at just one day after birth? if so, what must they be like on the day of birth? and i thought human births were painful .... i'd be willing to believe that maybe the spines arent stiff during infancy and would only be like hairs, but I cant find any information on this, or on the birth process.
