Crowns and updates

Why has this been updated and the crown changed?

There are two purposes to these files, the current version (under this name) and also the historical version(s), with the different crowns. Both are relevant.

We should preserve the various dated versions (files renamed when a reign ends): File:Badge of the House of Windsor (1938-1952).svg & File:Badge of the House of Windsor (1952-2022).svg and also the current version, most easily with a rename to the relevant dated one. But we should not (as has now gone on) simply remove and replace the older versions with the older crowns [1], and especially not make them into redirects to what is now an anachronistic representation. I thought it would be easier to do it this way. The other file was not really used and I didn't want to make changes to all the articles. Sorry if this was wrong, please advise on correct way. --Sodacan (對話) 14:22, 28 September 2022 (UTC)

It's fine as is. I thought that these were both redirects, but I realise now that we've had two copies for years.

I still don't like the file history for this canonical name, because it would be much simpler if we left the crowns alone in the named files and just had a redirect from the current one, however long that lasts for. However I recognise that this sort of good software practice thing never gets recognition on Wikimedia projects. Andy Dingley (對話) 16:29, 28 September 2022 (UTC)
