The non Japanese man on this picture may possibly be [Robert B. Van Valkenburgh] as mentioned in the picture comment on the japanese page about [Matsudaira Taro 松平太郎]. In this case, the date of the picture is more likely to be 1866-1869, dates of residence of Robert B. • A copy of the photograph is being auctioned in England.[1] The auction catalogue dates this photograph as 22 September 1867, and give some some more details. They cite "Terry Bennett, Photography In Japan 1853-1912, (2006), p. 116, fig. 140", which may be the source of their description.
