This image is not of the British flag being raised on New Guinea annexed by Queensland - the flag raising by Queensland happened on 4 April 1883 and was performed by Henry Chester, the Police Magistrate from Thursday Island, the Sydney Morning Herald reports that there were only 13 Europeans present and there is an image in the Illustrated London News dated 7 July 1883 has a drawing of the the flag raising and it is not this one. This image is outside of the Rev William Lawes of the Londong Missionary Society, 6th November 1884. When Commodore James Erskine of the British Royal Navy procliamed in Port Moresby a protectorate over he south-east coast of New Guinea and its islands to the east.
