Origin of the photograph

[編輯]

Dear users @USHMM and Buidhe: Within this file, there is some information worth to be corrected. A reliable source to explain the photograph is

  • Harry Stein, "Konzentrationslager Buchenwald 1937-1945. Begleitband zur ständigen historischen Ausstellung", Wallstein-Verlag, Göttingen, 4th edition, 2005, pages 81-83

You can have a quick preview of page 83 here: https://books.google.de/books?id=u2Xx4fz5K4cC&pg=PA83. The picture was published by the SS newspaper "Das Schwarze Korps" at 26 June, 1941. It shows prisoners of concentration camp Mauthausen. It is true that the prisoners were sent from camp Buchenwald, but the photograph was taken in Mauthausen.

Thus, the following parts of the text have to be corrected

Dutch Jews in prison uniforms, marked with a yellow star and the letter "N" for the Netherlands, stand during an appeal in the Buchenwald concentration camp.

Buchenwald, [Thuringia] Germany
=> Mauthausen, [Upper Austria] Austria
28 February 1941 / 28. Februar 1941
=> 26 June 1941 / 26. Juni 1941

Explanatory note: The Gusen camp mentioned in the actual text of the file was a subcamp of Mauthausen, see Gusen concentration camp.

I am writing after having corresponded with people of https://www.buchenwald.de/894/, and they aggree with the correction. Do you agree to correct the text of the file? Best regards, --T. Wirbitzki (留言) 21:20, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[回覆]

It looks like your corrections are well supported, so I would go for it. Thanks for working to correct image descriptions! Buidhe (留言) 22:23, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[回覆]
BTW the USHMM account has not been active in over a decade and does not respond to pings. Buidhe (留言) 22:24, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[回覆]
Thank you for the quick reply! Then I look forward to changing the text as discussed in the near future.
Something else occurred to me. Not every reader (except an author of the Wikipedia article about Gusen ;-) will understand that the Gusen camp belonged to Mauthausen.
Therefore I suggest another correction:
On May 22 the remaining 341 Dutch Jews were transferred to Gusen.
=> On May 22 the remaining 341 Dutch Jews were transferred to Gusen, a subcamp of Mauthausen
What is your opinion about this? --T. Wirbitzki ([[User talk:T. Wirbitzki|留言
I think it is Ok to make that small remark about the closeness of the two camps. --T. Wirbitzki (留言) 21:38, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[回覆]
