Why is it so brown?

Since this picture has been brought up as typical Gobi landscape, I think it's worth pointing out that throughout Mongolia, the grass gets brown in autumn, and then the scenery can look very desert-like when in fact it isn't. I haven't visited the area in July yet, so I can't comment on the mountains in the background, but the plains along the Delgermörön river (visible as a line of trees in the middle ground) between Bürentogtokh and Mörön actually look like good pasture when you are there. As can be seen in the foreground, there is even some farming and a vegetable garden, the latter seemingly without artificial irrigation Yaan 12:19, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[回复]
