Calling "ruled by england" the parts of the french kingdom that happen to have the king of England as lord seems a misunderstanding of feudalism to me. Given the politics of many Plantagenet kings, it would almost be closer to the reality to say that england was ruled by a western France lord. Maybe a more historically acurate phrase would be : "parts of french kingdom under english kings sovreignty ... even if i am unsure about sovreignty to be the best word for a feudal situation. If that is too long we can try something like : "french possessions of the english kings". "Continental possessions" may work, but we lost the piece of information about this land is actually inside the kingdom of France... Let s say : "English kings possessions in France"? Short and understandable isn t it? I know that is a small detail of the map, but it can be misleading, the situation in 1173 being really different from what it will become during the hundred s year war.
