I worked on St. Nicolas Island in 1964-65. CVE-91 had run aground at the north end of the island and broke its back. I and others swam out to the carrier, and explored the wreck. The ship had been mothballed, and was pretty much fully equipped. We tried taking some simple souvenirs, such as china from the mess, but it was too difficult to swim and carry anything as you had to time your entry and exit from the sea, as there was no beach, but a rocky ledge.
