Color for DST year-round[编辑]

There's no apparent color legend for those areas observing DST year-round. Can we add a color for that? CoolGamer23 (留言) 19:05, 18 February 2020 (UTC)[回复]

@CoolGamer23: All areas in the world use a standard time that is ahead or behind their mean solar time by various amounts, as shown on this map with a continuous color range. "DST year-round" usually refers to the case where standard time is ahead of mean solar time by a large amount, such as an hour, but the term is not well defined to allow marking areas on a map consistently. In addition, some of these areas also observe actual DST, further increasing the difference to solar time for part of the year, so I think that it would be confusing to include both effects on the same map. Yukon has abolished DST[编辑]

Yukon had been updated. Heitordp (留言) 05:47, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[回复]

South Sudan[编辑]

Absolutely no reason not to include South Sudan. Just because it was not independent does not mean it did not at one point use DST. What is the point of having historical sections on maps if they don't include the history of more recently created states. UnaitxuGV, please add it back as did AKS471883 and Heitordp in their versions of the map. --Ratherous (留言) 07:19, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[回复]

South Sudan has never observed Daylight Saving as the map suggests. It should be dark gray. --Mahmudmasri (留言) 00:36, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[回复]
@Mahmudmasri: This is a map of areas, not only independent countries or autonomous territories. If DST was ever observed in an area, but not anymore, this area is shown in light gray, regardless of its political status at that time or now. The area that is currently South Sudan observed DST from 1970 to 1985, so this area should be shown in light gray. Similarly, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan observed DST only before their independence and they are also shown in light gray. Several small changes[编辑]

@UnaitxuGV: Your latest edit again reverted several previous contributions from other users. You're not collaborating properly. Before you make an update, please download the latest version of the file online and start editing from that file. Don't use the file that you already had in your computer. These are all the changes that still need to be restored:

  • As Ratherous wrote above, South Sudan should be light gray because it used DST in the past. It doesn't matter if it wasn't independent yet. The map should show areas that used DST, regardless of political status.
  • In British Columbia:
    • Creston should be near the border with Idaho, not Montana.
    • The western part of the Peace River Regional District should be blue as it uses DST.
    • The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality doesn't seem to be drawn very well. Note that this map uses the Robinson projection, which is different from most maps of Canada.
  • In Saskatchewan, Creighton should be blue as it uses DST.
  • In Ontario, the locations of Atikokan and New Osnaburgh should be further west. For example, New Osnaburgh should be very close to Lake St. Joseph, which is outlined on the map.
  • Northern Cyprus should be blue. It reintroduced DST in 2017.[1]
  • In Mauritania, Nouakchott and the southern tip of the coast need to be colored.
  • In Nigeria, some islands on the coast need to be colored.
  • In Egypt, the wide portion of the Nile near Cairo should be outlined in black, similar to other coasts and lakes, or merged into the surrounding gray like other rivers.
  • In Vietnam, two small islands near China should be dark gray.
  • Tonga (one pixel, currently orange) should be colored light gray. Tonga stopped using DST in 2017.[2] Heitordp (留言) 09:42, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[回复]
I restored the above changes by reverting to a previous version. Heitordp (留言) 09:05, 15 November 2020 (UTC)[回复]
It's not that South Sudan was an occupied territory or a sub-region inside Sudan. It just never existed and was created in 2011 which makes it in the dark gray countries. --Mahmudmasri (留言) 00:39, 3 January 2023 (UTC)[回复]

Removal of Antarctica[编辑]

Why has a part of Earth's land mass be removed? 89.14.172.242 19:11, 25 November 2022 (UTC)[回复]

Antarctica does not have a government and the vast majority of it is uninhabited, so time zones and DST are not defined there by law or practice. They only exist in research stations, which occupy very small areas, some are not staffed continuously, and time zone and DST information is not available for all of them. So for simplicity I decided to just remove Antarctica from the map, as commonly done in other world maps of time zones. Maps don't have to show the entire world. An alternative would be to show Antarctica in a different color, such as white with a black outline. Heitordp (留言) 05:59, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[回复]

Greenland[编辑]

Greenland needs updating as most of it no longer uses daylight saving time. [3] DelUsion23 (talk) 18:49, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[回复]

@Delusion23: Greenland is still using DST. It currently has standard time UTC–3 with DST in UTC–2, and on 29 October 2023 it will change to standard UTC–2 with DST in UTC–1. Heitordp (留言) 22:42, 26 March 2023 (UTC)[回复]
@Delusion23: The tz database was adjusted to reflect how the law specifies it, UTC–2 without DST in 2023. I changed the Wikipedia maps and articles accordingly. In 2024, they will need to be changed again to UTC–2 with DST. Heitordp (留言) 22:21, 5 April 2023 (UTC)[回复]
