The stars ought to have eight points. See The drawing of the United Tribes Ensign sent by Governor Bourke to King William IV for a reliable description of the flag.

No. The flag was originally drawn with eight stars and black fimbriation between the blue quarters and smaller red cross. When the flag was officially gazetted the following year, it was corrected to have five-pointed stars and white fimbriation. It was this latter version, as depicted here, which served as a de facto New Zealand national flag from 1835 to 1840. Both this variety and the version originally drawn in 1834 are seen today (as, occasionally, is a version with six-pointed stars) and the eight-pointed/black fimbriated one is more common, but officially this image is correct. Ideally, we should have both images on Wikipedia. For more info, see Flags of the World's page on the flag. Grutness (talk) 00:51, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[回复]
I've added the usually-seen version at File:UnitedTribesUnofficial.png. Grutness (talk) 01:13, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[回复]
