This picture, while it may be aesthetically pleasing, is not at all representative of Flammulina velutipes.

This mushroom is commonly called the Winter Mushroom for it's appearance during thaws in winter-time with snow still on the ground, but more importantly for my point here, Velvet Foot, so named for it's distinct dark brown velvety stalk.

I have found this mushroom numerous times myself, have seen it all over the web, and none look even remotely similar to this mushroom. In fact the only similarity it bears to Flammulina velutipes is it's growth from a tree.

The ID of this species as Flammulina velutipes is incorrect.
