The dog shown on the painting is not a Papillon! It is one of two varieties of the Continental Toy Spaniel called "Phaléne" with dropped ears. This is the original version of the Continental Toy Spaniel, the standing ears were bred in much later! This variety is not very common anymore since people prefer the Papillon and mistake it as an own breed but it is only one of two varieties! Also in those days those spaniels also had solid colors, today they are mostly white with patterns.

Der Hund in dem Gemälde ist kein Papillon! Es handelt sich hierbei eine der zwei Varietäten des "Kontinentalen Zwergspaniel" mit Hängeohren, genannt "Pharléne". Dhies ist die ursprüngliche oForm des "Kontinentalen Zwergspaniel", die Stehohren wurden erst viel später reingezüchtet! Der Phaléne ist nicht mehr sehr oft anzutreffen seit der Papillon mehr nachgefragt wird und es wird irrtümlich der Papillon als eigene Rasse verstanden, dabei ist es nur eine von zwei Varietäten! Damals hatten diese Spaniels alle Farben, auch einfarbig, nicht wie heute, wo sie mehrheitlich weiß mit Flecken sind.
