Was Jacquetta in the Recueil d'Arras?

[编辑]

I've been through the digitized manuscript (linked at the bottom of the French-language page for the Recueil) and there's no mention of Jacquetta. Could Rubens have somehow mistaken the portrait of Isabella of Bourbon (#63) for her? The clothing and posture are very close, although the face is different. It may also be Catherine de Neufville (#121) whose portrait comes directly before that of Philippa de Lalaing, who Rubens copied on the same page. Also on this page is a portrait which may be a distortion of the portrait of Bonne d'Abbeville (#184), which would be then mistaken in its labeling as "Bonne de la Veuville". It may be that Rubens couldn't read the captions on the drawings (although it seems hard to mistake "Isabel" or "Catherine" for "Jacqueline"). The original portrait of Catherine no longer exists, as far as I know, but Isabella's (or a copy of it) is still available to speak to the accuracy of the drawing.
