Sorry, Nicolas Visscher died in 1652. The map above is the result of his son Nicolaum reworking his father's original 1651 copper plate which, in 1651, was a composite version of Johannes Jansson's 1650 map and Johannes Blaeu's 1650 etched view of New Amsterdam. The above updated version, filled with new details and to include Philadelphia, was reissued after 1683. The coloring is imaginative and has no historical or geographical relevance. It certainly has no meaning with respect to the rationale for the map's original creation by Johannes Jansson in 1650 which, in turn, had engraved it from the manuscript version that was produced in New Amsterdam in 1648. It was designed to help in aiding the envisaged negotiations for fixed borders by the Dutch Republic and England. April 17, 2006. DeKoning (Note by User:Flamarande)
