Incorrect Transcription

[编辑]

Greetings! I've never done this for a media file (only for articles), so I apologize if I've started this page the wrong way. I'll keep it brief and simple. It's a small issue, but so are many others on Wikimedia Wikis. Anyway, I'm not sure which, but as for the spelling/writing of the word Meiryo, either the Roman alphabet transcription (and therefore the name Meiryo itself) is incorrect according to the rules of the Japanese language. The first several letters (two syllables or morae) are perfectly correct. It's the last syllable(s) where the problem occurs. There are two possible solutions, depending on whether the transcription or the katakana (Japanese) characters are incorrect.

If the correct form is Meiryo, as it is generally written in the Roman alphabet (i.e., メイリオ), then the picture contains the wrong word. The literal (Hepburn-system) transcription of the syllables written on the picture in katakana is actually "me-i-ri-o" and not "me-i-ryo", which it should be if there is a 'y' in the Roman version. In other words, if the name really is spelled with a 'y' (i.e., Meiryo), then the Japanese writing on the picture should be メイリョ, which is transcribed Meiryo.

If, however, the correct form is actually Meirio (which I doubt, having been unable to find any examples of that spelling using several search engines), then the writing on the picture should be as it is, and the transcription ("Meiryo") is incorrect. In this case, the name should be spelled "Meirio".

In summation, I apologize for the sloppy writing, but I am in a hurry and will have to clean it up later. I just thought this should be brought to the attention of those more qualified/experienced than I, as it is a mistake. It's a small mistake, to be sure, but is nonetheless a mistake and I love helping make Wikipedia and her sister sites better any way I can, after all the good stuff I've got from the sites since Wikipedia first went live. I can upload an improved picture if needed. Just let me know! =)
