Inaccurate

This image is wrong and does not represent the construction of any practical mercury battery. If you look at diagrams in other, more reliable references, you find this diagram does not resemble the actual construction of mercury batteries. They didn't have a zinc can like a Leclanche flashlight battery, they were in steel cans. The cathode isn't steel, it's the mercuric oxide pellet. The mercuric oxide isn't in solution, it is a powder moistened with the electrolyte. Look at a good reference book such as David Linden "Handbook of Batteries 3rd Edition", Chapter 11.
