The specimen shown in this image is actually Opuntia azurea var. diplopurpurea. Opuntia macrocentra and azurea and related & subordinate taxa were discussed and sorted by A.M. Powell & J.F. Weedin (2004) in the book 'Cacti of the Trans-Pecos and Adjacent Areas', and this treatment is generally accepted now.
