I marvelled to this, too.

I got noticed that my comment to mitigation has been chopped.

Replaced presumably wrong length unit by a more suitable one.

Replaced affected image area in the otherwise unchanged JPEG data via jpegtran's -crop and -drop features; 36 JPEG tiles of 256 pixels each are replaced, all other 555156 pixels are (or at least should be) not affected (not reencoded).

The original image was manipulated using Gimp. The changed image was saved using Quality setting of 85 (dropped in by Gimp as of ticking "Use quality settings from original image"), Subsampling of 4:2:0 (to prevent jpegtran from complaining) and DCT method Floating (to achieve comparable size of output file).

Then jpegtran was used with the following parameters to extract the changes from my saved image:

         -crop 176x32+384+704
         -crop 48x64+416+640
         -crop 16x64+464+688

The following parameters were used to drop in the snippets into the original image:

         -drop +384+704 snippet1
         -drop +416+640 snippet2
         -drop +464+688 snippet3
