buen pregunta. a legend should be added to the article. forgive the English answer but:

I think the light gray are areas where Catalan is not spoken or not predominant. But there are three places in mainland spain and the one in france where catalan is spoken. the gray areas are part of those places/ regions/ communities but are not catalan-speaking areas. make sense? Tango303 (留言) 06:39, 12 January 2016 (UTC) PS although, I'm not sure why that little gray part is at the bottom of Aragon. it's far enough away from La Franja & it's outside the Valencian community, so it seems odd to me.[回复]
