Are we sure this is public domain? The mere fact that the original was created in the 16th century does not automatically make it so: this looks like a modern sketch of the original, not a reproduction, and as such it may well be under copyright.

Bigger resolution?

The image is a mere 300x400 so it's hard to see what's going on. The URL points to a dead website. :(--TZubiri (留言) 00:15, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[回复]

Misleading description and poor quality image

[编辑]

This low quality image has nothing to do with "telling a story of coming of missionaries to Hispaniola" nor is it a Taíno document as many of the pages on which it is used assert. Rather, it is copied from a "testarian" catechism made by missionaries in New Spain (i.e., México) to teach Christian doctrine as a part of evangelization efforts among Indigenous communities there. See, for example: Libro de oraciones, Biblioteca Nacional de Antropología e Historia, Dr. Eusebio Dávalos Hurtado inv. 10-163080 I recommend deleting the file entirely. --Alammana (留言) 20:00, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[回复]

The image description is Misleading

[编辑]

I agree with Alammana about the misleading information. I have knowledge on this subject, and this picture is a sketch from a missionary book https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testerian_catechisms.

one of the original drawing is in commons File:3.- DCCCLXXIX.0001 - Catecismo Testeriano o Tasteriano c 1524.tif

method

It appears the author of the original article is Piotr Konieczny, who IS wikipedia User Piotrus (see user page). I do not doubt the good faith of Piotrus, who may have got the image from somewhere else.

Unfortunately, year after year, this image (and story) became viral. It is used a many countries (school programms) to tell the story of the encounter between missionaries and people from hispaniola, drawn by the Tainos. A google search shows that many website misleadingly use it.

suggestions I recommend either deletion but or that the caption/description is updated.

A few days ago,

  • I removed the false image pieces of information ("circa 1510", "Encounter between missionary and locals", "hispaniola")
  • I manually edited all erroneous wikipedia interlinks to this image where necessary, or changed the caption the most accurately if possible.

I suggest writing an article about this hoax, due to the large dissemination of this image and story

Update:
I finally found the original source of this image:
"Carolyn S Dean, praying with pictures a reading of the Libro de oraciones
journal of latin american lore 15, 2 1989 211-273".
I contacted her, and she told me she redrew it from a Testarian manuscript: Libro de oraciones, 16th century, available in the library of the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico Ospeleo (留言) 08:43, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[回复]

False description of the image. Proposed Deletion

[编辑]

Since my previous post, I received an answer from the "Mediateca INAH" (National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico) who sent me a picture of the original document that was copied by Dr Carolyn S Dean.

I ask for the file deletion, since it is misleading/false

The original document (CC-BY-ND) was uploaded on wikimedia
