Titanic was built in the harland and wolff shipyards in Belfast. The Titanic was the White star line's ship. The ships construction was the work of Lord William Pirrie the director of the harland and wolff shipyards and the White star line. Thomas Andrews the harland and wolff construction manager put over 2 to 3 thousand men to work for 3 years to build the Titanic. The ship had capacity to hold 3,500 passengers and crew. Titanic weighed about 46,000 tons and was measured to be 882 feet long. Titanic was 175 feet high and had 9 decks. Titanic had 20 boilers and 162 furnaces. She burned 650 tons of coal a day which cranked out about 16,000 horsepower. Her top speed was about 24 knots. Aboard Titanic she had 4 smoke stacks each 22 feet wide and 6 stories high. Prices for a first class ticket was $4,300 and for third class it was only $36. The ship had a swimming pool, 3 cigar rooms a turkish bath a gym and a dark photography room. Titanic departed from Southhampton, England on April 10, 1912 and was estimated to arrive in New York on April 17, 1912. On board Titanic carried 2,200 passengers and crew but lifeboats for only 1,178. Titanic was at 22 knots when it struck an iceberg at 11:40pm on April 14, 1912. The iceberg cut a hole 220 to 245 feet long on the starboard side of Titanic's hull. Water came rushing in at an estimated 7 tons a second. Titanic sank in less than 3 hours the survival rate was first class 60% second class 42% third class 25% and crew less than 25%. The ship's final resting place is located at 350 miles southeast of Newfoundland, Canada 2.3 miles at the bottom of the north Atlantic Ocean. When the ship sank over 1,500 people died and only 702 to 705 survived the tragic event. This year in 2013 the wreck is 101 years old.
