This Aircraft wasn't always "Marine One" In fact it was ARMY One originally. The color of the Presidential fleet is unusual in that is a mix of Army and Marine green.

The pilots on Nixon's last flight were Army LTC Gene Boyer (Pilot) and Army Chief Warrant Officer Carl Burhanan (Co-Pilot). Carl Burhanan was the first African American Pilot to fly as pilot in command of an aircraft with an American President on board.

The US Marines took over the operation of the Presidential Helicopter Fleet during the Ford administration. Prior to that, the Army flew all of the overseas missions and most of the domestic (CONUS) missions
