Originally attributed: J.R. Brown, probably Joseph Brown, Engraver (active 1837–1886)[1], photo taken by Rischgitz/Getty Images As Brown was active in 1837, he is unlikely have been still living in 1944.

Reasoning for reattribution: Without doubting the copyright status, J.R. Brown was not the Joseph Brown postulated...
JB was solely an historical and portrait engraver (ie copies of existing artwork)
JB engraved very finely on steel using a mixture of line and stipple techniques
JB never used a middle initial or name from baptism to death
JB died 1887

JRB was active 1872-1890 (http://www.garwood-voigt.com/catalogues/maps50-90.htm)
JRB was classed as a draughtsman/illustrator rather than an engraver (http://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/personExtended/mp05830/william-luson-thomas?tab=iconography)
JRB's illustrations were carved into wood
JRB's style is very different - 'current affairs' from life or imagination (http://www.lookandlearn.com/history-images/search.php?search=J+R+Brown&bool=phrase)
"JRB may be J.R. Brown, draughtsman illustrator who worked for The Graphic 1874-1877 and 1885-1888" (http://catalogue.wellcomelibrary.org/record=b1195237)

JRB's signature is also very different to that of JB

So I have corrected attribution to 'J.R, Brown, Draughtsman/Illustrator for "The Graphic' (active 1872-1890)"
