Clarification of Photo Description

• Background info on formula depiction: It looks like uniformed US Navy personnel standing in formation to spell out the formula E=mc^2. Notice the irregular shapes of the letters near the edges, especially visible near the bottom of the 'E.' This is not mentioned in the photo's description. Does anyone know if these are people standing on the flight deck or is it painted on?
