Why is the mean plot shaking a little? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 213.136.43.20 (talk) 07:10, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[返信]

Just a visual metaphor that the "seesaw" is balanced. Cheers, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 08:37, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[返信]

I am not sure I understand this representation... wouldn't the balancing point be at the median of the distribution? --174.91.48.251 15:28, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[返信]

Not really: for a seesaw to balance, we have to take into account the mass of each "particle" and its perpendicular distance from the pivot (i.e. the moment). This technique is used in w:locating the center of mass of an irregular object. The median takes into account the mass but not the distance. Cheers, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 15:35, 9 October 2020 (UTC)[返信]
