Propp, (1928) wrote a book based on his theories called ‘The Morphology of a Fairytale’. The basis of his theory was that you could apply stock characters, stock plots (narratives) and moral codes (often based on religion) to any story, and could even be applied to our own real lives. He believed that every story was based on a conflict. A good illustration of this would be good vs evil, the rich vs the poor, strength vs weakness.
