Unrecognized states

[編輯]

Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Donetsk, Luhansk, Transnistria, Artsakh and Somaliland definitely are not members or even observers of the WTO but are green on this map. Most of the world countries recognize them as integral parts of WTO-member countries, however, actual economic activity on these territories is not affected by WTO and its rules. They must be colored in red or not be shown at all.Мофф Джерджеррод (留言) 15:17, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[回覆]

In the context of this map I think depicting the de jure borders is most appropriate. Colouring them red as non-members implies that they are states which just have not become members, which is obviously not the case. From the WTO perspecitve, they fall within the legal memebership of the relevant WTO member states. TDL (留言) 00:44, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[回覆]
That's eternal problem when we're dealing with unrecognized states. That's contradiction between de jure and de facto status of these territories. You're right, from WTO prespective these territories fall within legal membership of the relevant member states. That's de jure situation. But from the other side, in fact these territories exist like if they were not members of WTO. Economic and business activity on these territories is not affected by WTO rules. That's de facto situation and I think it also needs to be depicted on this map. If not in red, then in gray or some new color for unrecognized states. If not, there's no reason to show the unrecognized states' borders (like Kosovo-Serbia border, Abkhazia-Georgia border) on this map at all. I think, either unrecognized states' borders should be removed or they must be colored in red, gray or some other color. Мофф Джерджеррод (留言) 16:12, 25 December 2021 (UTC)[回覆]
Yeah it's really a question of whether to depict de jure or de facto statuses. Generally maps which depict membership in organizations tend to display the de jure status, such as for example: File:United Nations Members.svg. De facto status are much more of a grey area. For example, beyond unrecognized states the are many cases of rebel groups that control territory and which effectively prevent central government control and application of WTO rules. Trying to depict that accurately and keeping it updated is effectively impossible I would argue. TDL (留言) 03:02, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[回覆]
The map should show the real situation, or let's paint the unrecognized countries in stripes (red-green). A map is a map to show how TERRITORIES are doing, and if the TERRITORY on the map belongs to an unrecognized state that is not a member of the WTO, then it should be red.
