HMS Victory

English: HMS Victory was Lord Nelson`s Flagship during the battle of Trafalgar. It is now a museum ship in Portsmouth, England. The Victory was quite an old ship by the time of Trafalgar having been built some 30 years earlier. She was not particularily fast but is supposed to have had a good crew and was very stable in the water when Nelson chose her as his flagship. During the battle she was quite badly damaged and was towed back to Gibraltar for repairs. The ship has never been decommisioned from the Royal Navy and has a captain and crew but is in permanent dry dock where she is a very popular tourist attraction. The ship is well cared for but, being made of timber, much of the original ship has been rebuilt over the years. It is possible upon visiting the site, to gain a very good impression of life aboard a Royal naval ship 200 years ago, to see where Nelson was shot, and the place where he died. Various ceremonial events take place on the Victory, and in 2005 she was the centre of a celebration with the Queen in attendance to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.
