AWM caption : "Scotland, Firth of Forth. Inside a turret on the battle cruiser HMAS Australia. Able Seaman W J Cotter rams home a projectile in a 12 inch gun, watched by Able Seaman T R Field (left)."


Comment : note that this is the left gun of a pair, the breech opens to the left, and the Welin breech block is rotated anti-clockwise to lock it. See File:HMAS Australia 12 inch gun loaded AWM EN0015.jpeg for breech closed.
