The Anewalt Brothers Hat and Fur store opened on January 17th, 1891 at 615 Hamilton Street, by Lewis L, Charles L. and John A. Anewalt. They were sons of Samuel B. Anewalt, their father, who also had a Hat and Fur store at 8th & Hamilton Streets. The store had an adverting icon of a white bear, of which a taxidermed bear was prominently placed on the sidewalk in front of the store's entrance. In January 1908, Lewis L Anewalt left the business and began his own, next door at 617 Hamilton Street.

The Anewalt Brothers store operated successfully until June, 1935 when it went out of business. The property was subsequently purchased by Dobnoffs, a woman's apparel store, which integrated the property into their existing store and consolidated it with the former Lewis L Anewalt store at 617 Hamilton, which it had purchased in 1928.

Charles L. Anewalt subsequently worked for Dobnoffs in their fur department for several years. He later worked at the City of Allentown water works. He passed in January, 1950 at age 72. John A Anewalt subsequently worked for Ednicott & Johnson at 641 Hamilton street. He passed in May, 1951 also at age 72. The fate of the white bear which stood in front of the Anewalt Brothers store is undermined.
