The Bagh Caves are ten Buddhist caves – nine according to some – along the Baghani river in Dhar district of southwest Madhya Pradesh. They are among the most celebrated and studied Buddhist caves in India, often compared and contrasted with the Ajanta Caves.

They are notable for the paintings in Cave 4 – the ranga mahal, considered by some to be the among the best samples of chitrakala from 5th to 6th century. A series of discoveries such as of inscriptions and copper plate through 1982 have led to significant revisions to the dating and theories about the Bagh Caves. They confirm that the Gupta era kings accepted and supported Buddhism in distant parts of their empire. The continued decay and collapse of some of the Bagh caves from natural clay above them have triggered much international and Indian effort to preserve them and study them before they are permanently lost.
