Baijnath, also referred to as Katyur in Sanskrit texts, is a historic town midst the Kumaon hills, Uttarakhand. A prosperous Himalayan trade hub on the banks of Gomti and Saryu rivers, it became the new capital of the Hindu Katyuri dynasty in late 10th century, who previously ruled from Kartikeyapur. Thereafter, many Hindu temples were built in the Baijnath area between the 10th and 12th century. The Baijnath temple group is one of the largest group of these temples and attributed to the Katyuris.

The Baijnath temple group has 18 temples, with the main temples dedicated to Shiva and Parvati.
