The Berlin pattern, also called the North German pattern, is a pattern of French-suited cards that originated in Stralsund, north Germany, by around 1856. It descends from the Hamburg pattern, but differs in that the Queens are uncrowned and wear clothing and hair-styles from the 1840s, and the crown on the King of Hearts usually sports a laurel wreath, echoing the naming of his French antecedents as "Caesar". The pattern was made by numerous German cardmakers and is still produced today, being the most common French-suited pattern in Germany.[1]
