English: The Canal Defence Light was a secret, World War 2, British project to equip tanks with powerful, carbon-arc searchlights, fitted in specially designed, armoured turrets. The purpose was to both illuminate and to dazzle enemy troops during a night attack. An inaccurate name was deliberately chosen to help conceal the device's true purpose. A total of around six hundred were constructed.
