Cego cards are produced in Germany primarily for the Baden national game of Cego which is played in the Black Forest region. There are 2 different patterns. One is the only surviving Animal Tarot pattern still made and is known as the Adler Cego pattern that dates to the early 19th century, probably the 1840s.[1][2] The other is of the Bourgeoise Tarot pattern made by F.X. Schmid, known in France as the Black Forest Cego pattern or Cego de la Forêt Noire. This pattern first appeared in the mid-19th century, produced by C.L. Wüst of Frankfurt.[3] The Schmid variant also dates to the 19th century.[3] Originally produced as 78-card packs, today only 54-card packs are available.
