This is one of the chhattis durgs (36 historic forts) of Chhattisgarh that give the state its name. This fort with Hindu architecture dates from the 11th-century, with additions in the 12th-century, and some restoration in the 21st-century. It sits on top of the hills east of Amarkantak, Madhya Pradesh in the Korba district of north Chhattisgarh. It is about 30 kilometers from the historic sites of Pali, Korba.

The Chaiturgarh fort has four entrance dwars (gateways), each with distinct Hindu artwork. Only one of these is partly restored, others were destroyed in the wars between Delhi Sultanate and Hindu kingdoms of Chhattisgarh. Inside the fort are several manmade water reservoirs such as the Gargaj Talab, an 11th century Mahisasuramardini Durga temple that sits on a high jagati, and several other historic structures.
