English: A contested convention is a political convention where no one candidate has amassed enough bound delegates to secure the nomination ahead of time. Unlike a "brokered" convention, a contested convention lasts only one ballot (whereas the defining characteristic of a brokered convention is that the require multiple ballots).
At a contested convention one candidate typically has secured the nomination ahead of the floor vote either with the addition of unbound delegates, through the concession of an opponent, or through a change in the rule of the convention.

Prior to the modern primary system, a contested convention occurred when no candidate had enough pledged delegates heading into the convention, but the convention lasted only one ballot.
