A sweep shot in cricket is played usually to the batsman's 'on side' (leg side) of the wicket, the batter kneeling, or significantly bending, his back leg after moving his front leg forward, and striking a low bouncing ball, typically from a slow bowler or spinner, with a 'sweeping' horizontal stroke across his front leg, either in front of the calf or just above the height of the thigh.
Variations include the 'slog sweep', which converts the stroke to a power shot, and the gentler 'paddle', designed to better control the placement of the ball.
In a 'reverse sweep', the batter reverses the swing and face of the bat to enable a shot to his 'off side'.
