The De Dion-Bouton 6 CV was a voiturette class small car when introduced as the light, tube-framed Vis-à-vis Type L in 1902. It was succeeded by the slightly larger Populaire series, which carried a front mounted engine, and included several 6 CV variants.

In 1907, De Dion-Bouton introduced a new generation of heavier built cars with pressed steel frames. Among these was a new 6 CV. Following the usual De Dion-Bouton practise, even small changes led to a new model designation. This started with a single letter, and was followed by double letter designations, starting with AA, followed by AB, and so on. As this was a chronological system, these combinations are unrelated.

French and British tax horse power do not correlate. The designation 6 CV fits French Cheval fiscaux.
