In January 1913, the Zurich photographer Franz Schmelhaus turned to the rectorate of the University of Zurich with an offer to publish an artistic portfolio (“Kunstmappe”) containing the pictures of all university professors “with free admission in the studio or at home”. A copy of the folder would be officially donated to the university on the occasion of the celebration of the opening of their new main building in spring 1914.

The portfolio donated to the university contains not only portraits of the ordinary (59) and extraordinary (20) professors employed at the university at that time, but also of the majority of lecturers (77). It was not preserved as a whole, but — at a point in time that could no longer be reconstructed — was dismantled into its individual parts, and the photos were divided on the respective personal files (“Dozierendendossiers”) which can be found today in the UZH Archives.
