In the United States and Canada, the term "English saddle" is used to describe a range of saddle types developed in Europe (often England, but not always) based on a lightweight tree and stuffed, padded panels, generally excluding designs used for stock herding and most (but not all) military designs. The category includes those used in the international equestrian competitions of jumping, eventing, and dressage as well as some American-modified designs such as the Saddle Seat design.

In contrast, the American stock saddle is generally called a "western" saddle.

This category may also be used for images of English-type saddles that cannot be more specifically categorized into a narrower category.

Images in this category may also be re-categorized into more specific saddle categories as appropriate, the cross-subcategorization of related designs is for convenience, and this is not intended to be a parent category, but rather a partially diffusing "sibling" category for the assistance of North American users.
