Deutsch: Mit dem Schmotzigen Donnerstag (auch Schmotziger Dunschtich, Schmotziga Dorschdich, Schmotziga Dauschteg, Gombiger Doschdig, Gumpiger Dunschtig, Glombiger Doschdig oder einfach nur Schmotziga, in Südbaden und der Schweiz Schmutzige Dunschtig/Schmutziger Donnerstag) beginnt in der schwäbisch-alemannischen Fastnacht die eigentliche Fastnachtszeit. Er fällt auf den Donnerstag vor Aschermittwoch. In vielen Fastnachtshochburgen werden Umzüge veranstaltet und Straßenfastnachten gefeiert, die Schüler „befreit“ sowie die Amtsgeschäfte und der Rathausschlüssel vom Bürgermeister bis zum Fastnachtsdienstag symbolisch an die Narren übergeben. Vielerorts (besonders im alemannischen Raum) werden in Fett gebackene Fasnetsküchle (ein Hefegebäck) gegessen.

English: Fat Thursday ( German Fetter Donnerstag, Schmotziger Donnerstag, or in areas where carnival is celebrated Weiberfastnacht; Greek Τσικνοπέμπτη (Tsiknopempti); Polish Tłusty czwartek) is a traditional Polish and German feast marking the last Thursday before Lent and is associated with the celebration of Carnival. Because Lent is a time of fasting, the next opportunity to feast would not be until Easter. It is similar to, but should not be confused with, the French festival of Mardi Gras ("Fat Tuesday"). Traditionally it is a day dedicated to eating, when people meet in their homes or cafés with their friends and relatives and eat large quantities of sweets, cakes and other meals forbidden during Lent. Among the most popular all-national dishes served on that day are pączki or berliner, fist-sized donuts filled with rose marmalade, and faworki, French dough fingers served with lots of powdered sugar.

Español: Jueves Lardero o Jovelardero es el nombre con el que se conoce en diversas partes de España al jueves en que comienza el carnaval. En algunos lugares se conoce como día de la tortilla o día de la mona (Albacete), día del choricer o choricé (Bajo Aragón). En 2013 se celebró el 7 de febrero. En muchos pueblos este día se celebra una fiesta popular con diferentes costumbres, aunque básicamente consiste en una jornada al aire libre donde la gastronomía tiene un papel muy importante. La fiesta se celebra especialmente en las regiones orientales de la Península Ibérica, en algunas de las cuales se dice: "Jueves lardero, longaniza en el puchero".
