Fort George, in Castine, Maine, is located next to Maine Maritime Academy. The fort was originally known as Fort Penobscot by its first garrison of troops, and it was called Fort Castine by Admiral Sir George Collier. It was then officially named Fort George by its builder, British General Francis McClean, upon its completion in December 1779. It was unsuccessfully attacked by American forces during the ill-fated Penobscot Expedition in July of that same year, before its completion. It was held by British troops until they withdrew in 1784, and was again held by British troops during the War of 1812. After British troops withdrew for the final time in April, 1815, it was occupied and strengthened by US troops, who garrisoned it until 1819. It was subsequently abandoned and never reactivated.
