"... Around 1954 Jimmie Webster succeeded in securing talented Nashville-based country guitarists Chet Atkins for this role, a move that in time would completely turn around Gretsch's fortunes / After various discussions and meetings between the company and the guitarist, the Gretsch Chet Atkins Hollow Body 6120 model appeared in 1955. Atkins wasn't keen on the Western paraphernalia that Gretsch insisted on applying to the guitar — including cactus and cattle inlays, and a branded “G” on the body — but relented because he was so keen to get a signature guitar on to the market. / In fact, the decorations on the Hollow Body model were gradually removed over the following years. Gretsch had also given ground by adding a Bigsby vibrato to the production model, in line with Atkins's request. ... "

"In 1962 a profound change occurred in the Model 6120 Chet Atkins Hollowbody: the company introduced its Electrontone hollowbody design, a two-inch-deep, 15 1/2 inch-wide (not 16" as the catalog noted) double cutaway body with replica, not real, f-holes painted on the guitar. So, the Model 6120 had been converted from a true f-hole, single cutaway, hollow guitar to a simulated f-hole, double cutaway, semi-hollow instrument. The fake f-hole design was the brain child of Chet Atkins who had it incorporated into the 1958 Chet Atkins Country Gentleman to give the Gent the tone and timbre needed for that great Chet tone. "
