Inlets of Islay in the Scottish Gaelic vocabulary of coastal topography are nearly always designated by port, a portal to the coast. In contrast to an English port, which must always have facilities for the loading or unloading of ships and the embarkation or disembarkation of people, a Gaelic port may be in its natural state. Most often it has a beach, but the beach may be shingle or an eroded outcrop. For a larger inlet, Gaelic uses bàgh, but English tends to make no such distinction.
