Italiano: L'affresco Io a Canopo, rinvenuto nell'Ekklesiasterion del Tempio di Iside a Pompei, è esposto nel Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (inv. 9558) (cat. 1.63). Dopo l'uccisione di Argo, Io, tormentata da un tafano inviatole da Hera, nella sua fuga attraverso innumerevoli luoghi del Mediterraneo, giunse finalmente in Egitto dove, accolta da Iside nel suo santuario a Canopo sul Delta, riacquistò il suo aspetto umano e generò Epafo (avuto dalla sua unione con Zeus), capostipite delle stirpi regali di Egitto e Argo. L'affresco mostra il momento in cui Io, trasportata dal Nilo, viene accolta da una matronale Iside, assisa, con un cobra attorcigliato al braccio sinistro ed i piedi poggiati su di un coccodrillo, a simboleggiare la sua signoria sull'Egitto. Accanto vi è il figlioletto Arpocrate, ed alle sue spalle due figure isiache, un uomo ed una donna, forse sacerdotali, che agitano sistri.
English: The fresco Io at Canopus, found in the Ekklesiasterion of the Temple of Isis in Pompeii, is on display in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (inv. 9558) (cat. 1.63). After the killing of Argos, Io, tormented by a horsefly sent by Hera, in her flight through countless places in the Mediterranean, finally reached Egypt where, welcomed by Isis in her sanctuary at Canopus on the Delta, she regained her human aspect and generated Epaphus (from her union with Zeus), founder of the royal lineages of Egypt and Argos. The fresco shows the moment in which Io, transported by the Nile, is welcomed by a matronly Isis, seated, with a cobra twisted on her left arm and her feet resting on a crocodile, to symbolize her lordship over Egypt. Next to her is her little son Harpocrates, and behind him are two Isis figures, a man and a woman, perhaps priests, who wave sistrums.
