English: Iran, Syria, 12-13th centuries - The development of historiated decoration. Copy of the cartel : The recentless pursuit of colour that characterised artistic production of this period was in keeping with an increasing taste for narrative. Metalwork played on contrats using inlays : ceramics offered overglaze painted decorations in subtle shades obtained through successive firings. Popular iconographic themes, such as the figure of the prince, hunting or banquet scenes, and literary subjects, were rendered with increasing accuracy.
